Frente a la rigidez de las formas

Pilar Albarracín stands out as one of the most remarkable and influential contemporary Spanish artists of her generation, holding a significant place in the international contemporary art scene. This exhibition showcases the artist's most representative video works and performance art pieces, along with photographs and texts documenting her creative process, offering viewers a retrospective of her nearly three-decade artistic career as one of Spain's foremost artists. Starting from popular culture, Albarracín defends modernity and understands it as intellectual freedom, rejecting societal, gender, or religious biases. She examines the tradition, liberating it from the rituals and clichés established in earlier eras for political and historical reasons.

The classic collection from the Uffizi Galleries in Italy, featuring the world-renowned masterpiece "Flora," debuts in mainland China. This exhibition showcases 49 masterpieces from Venetian Painting, including works by Venetian masters such as "Flora," "Venus and Cupid with Dog and Partridge," and "Portrait of Vincenzo Mosti," as well as 8 exquisite oil paintings by Titian. In addition to the "Big Three" of the Venetian Painting—Titian, Veronese, and Tintoretto—there are also works by other Venetian masters such as Giorgione and Lotto.

This exhibition, the largest-scale event held by the Museo Nacional del Prado in China, is custom-tailored for the Museum of Art Pudong, making it the only stop worldwide. Featuring 70 authentic oil paintings from the Prado's collection, all crafted by world-renowned masters, the exhibition showcases a specially curated thematic unit focusing on one of the museum's most historically significant works—the Prado's "Mona Lisa". Ten thematic units delve into various aspects such as court celebrations, dynastic regimes, mythological stories, and everyday life, offering an in-depth analysis of the historical, social, and political evolution of Spain from the reign of Charles V to the early 20th century, spanning nearly five centuries.

Bird's Lament

The River, Orchestration, Walkman!河边走 - the nomadic off-kilter psych rock outfit that still manages to give me goosebumps each time I catch them return to Shanghai for a special showcase. One of the most original, talented, and strangely poignant acts I’ve seen in quite a while - they’re lightning in a bottle - one that grows richer with each outing and one that’s brimming alive with possibility.

Unshakeable, intense, sharp, dark, experimental, calm, introverted, direct – no matter your preference 6501 is made for impact. A rooted and swift guitar, bass, and drums trio from Xinjiang that was born out of the ashes of Puppet, one of China’s pioneering rock bands that was founded in 1991. Seasoned pros they are - crafting a stripped-back sound that keeps their biting and direct vocals at bay, utilized only when necessary. Like a bare tree trunk in the wilderness, there’s a rustic cutthroat edge to the band - one that only comes with age and experience.

Lush, warm, mellow indie rock from Tokyo - South Penguin has developed into one of the scene’s most dependable acts - coloring their nonchalant laid-back sounds with gleaming guitar licks and elaborate bass lines - a sun-baked blend of 60s psychedelic music, 80s new wave and Japanese city pop. They return to Shanghai courtesy of Luuv Label with support from Shanghai prog folk rock miscreants Dizang.

Hefei indie rockers Trip Fuel tap into the age of disillusion with evocative precision - a tapestry of emo rock earnestness, post-rock potency, shoegaze dissonance, and 90s-era alt-rock, the band continues to find new and unusual ways to express themselves, its vulnerabilities bleeding into the crevasses of it’s lengthy, brooding, high-wire arrangements. Unwavering, bittersweet, and deftly assembled - the band will be in town as part of their mini-tour with support from up-and-coming emo rockers Zhuyouhui.

The Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist NIIA - whose background in future jazz, pop, neo-soul, R&B, hip-hop, and classical music has helped her produce some of the most sultry and atmospheric indie soul music out there. She has quite the track record as well - collaborating with several big names in the music world, including Jazmine Sullivan, Laura Lee (Khruangbin), and Jonathan Wilson - as well as sharing the stage with acts such as Jorja Smith and The xx. Bewitching stuff.

Some of Japan’s leading extreme metal acts in the underground world storm through China this holiday - Tokyo-based Buddhist-themed blackened thrash metal act EVIL - who’ll bring their violent, primitive, rampant, violent, and delirious music that sounds ‘like zombies crawling out of the grave of the 1980s’ to Harley’s Back Room. Also on hand is blackened death metal duo Sex Messiah who hail from Osaka. For those curious about what the first wave of black metal sounded like, this is your jam.
