Churches & Brunches: What to Do for This Easter Sunday

See what Shanghai is getting up to for the festival of rebirth.

The tradition of eating on Easter began when the Anglo-Saxons would hold feasts celebrating the Spring goddess Ēostre. The tradition would eventually be absorbed into the Christian faith (as many old European festivals did). Now Easter Sunday is known as a time for praying and feasting, so here is a round-up of churches and brunches available in Shanghai this weekend festival.

Church Services


Usually, Shanghai's churches will host a number of Easter events, but due to the COVID regulations, foreign language religious services have been canceled until further notice. This means that international churches cannot hold in-person services this Easter or even normal mass. Additionally, many (but not all) Chinese-language services will require a Chinese ID to attend, as well as obviously be in Chinese.

      Easter Break

      The Bull & Claw is hosting a traditional Easter Weekend from April 3-5 (Sat-Mon), serving guests either a roast beef (138rmb) or lamb roast (158rmb), with all the trimmings. The lunch service runs from 11.30am-3pm, with dinner starting at 5.30pm. There are free-flow drinks for 188rmb, and run from 6-9pm. Make sure to book in advance.

      Easter Brunch

      Zeitgeist is doing a traditional German Easter Brunch. There will be a complimentary americano coffee, juice and fruits for every customer, but an additional 188rmb can get adults free-flow draft beers, house wines, bloody maries, sparkling wine, spritzes and selected G&Ts. The buffet costs 180rmb for adults, and half-price for children 6-15 years (ages below 6 are free). The event will run from 11am to 3pm. If the weather is good, a bouncy castle will be installed.



      Hawaii vibe-themed Easter Sunday brunch buffet experience at RBU Bar. There will be a mix of Western and Chinese dishes. Adult admission is 298rmb, but there is a family ticket (two adults and one child that is 6 years old or younger) for 738rmb. The brunch runs from 11am-3pm.



      The Paulaner at the Expo (as well as the venues at Binjiang, Xintiandi and Raffles City) will host an all-you-can-eat Easter Sunday Brunch Buffet. The event starts at 11am. There will be an assortment of starters, soups, hot dishes and desserts. There will be an extra buffet station with treats for children. Kids will be able to participate in activities, such as egg hunting, sack race, DIY masks and more. The cost of admission for children is free for below 4 years, 98rmb for 4-9 years, and 160rmb for 10-15 years. Adults are 299rmb, and an additional 160rmb gets a free-flow beer, house wine and prosecco.



      Goose Island is hosting an Easter Sunday brunch celebration. This is a special menu, with dishes such as Morrocan-inspired eggs benedict, lamb shanks and panna cotta. The price range for the dishes is 32-168rmb. The event starts at noon. Kids will be able to enjoy a DIY egg painting activity.



      KÄFER by The Binjiang One will have an Easter Sunday Brunch, featuring favorites of European culinary. There will be a semi-buffet with appetizers and desserts. Various egg dishes and main courses, such as Schnitzel with White Asparagus, Saffron Risotto with Lamb Chop, and Easter Egg with Truffle and Potato can be chosen from a special a la carte menu. Free Flow of Prosecco, house wine, freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juices, soft drinks, coffee, and tea will be accompanied. It's 528rmb per person and the brunch starts at 11am.

      Happy Easter Day

      Liquid Laundry is doing an Easter Lunch. There will be a festive menu, featuring dishes such as an Easter Brunch Quiche, Hot Springs poached egg and even a kid's special grilled cheese sandwich. Prices for dishes range from 50-118rmb. There will even be both an egg hunt and egg paint activity for kids.

      Easter Brunch

      The Fellas is offering a special set menu from Andrea Rano for Easter. It is 258rmb per person to order off the set menu, with an additional 258rmb for free-flow. An only free-flow option is available for 388rmb. The event starts at 11.30am.



      Chef Lucky Lasagna is preparing an Easter Sunday set menu of festive Italian dishes. Expect artichoke, asparagus and pancetta omelet, nettle and ricotta ravioli, mains of slow-roasted Lamb or Italian traditional roast beef, and desserts of strawberry with whipped cream and the traditional Easter cater pastiera. It costs 328rmb for the entire set menu, and 488rmb for both the set menu and 2-hours of free-flow wine.



      Have Easter lunch with the family at Scena! There will be a brunch buffet with free-flow juice and soft drinks. Children will be able to participate in an Easter egg hunt. The event runs from 12.15pm to 3.30pm, and it costs 482rmb per person. Scan the QR code to register.
