Cocktail bar Arch has closed! The northern-most bar of the Tastebuds empire shut its doors, putting an end to that particular run of high-brow cocktail chemistry and some truly excellent pasta dishes. No reason given, but we can speculate that the lack of regular crowds might have factored in to Daniel An's decision to shutter the place.
Not abandoning the spot though. Probably a good call, since Shankang Courtyard up the street is expected to pull in all kinds of Jing'an crowds as soon as it stops tasting primarily of construction dust. He's rebranding it into Atelier Izakaya. Still in early stages, and Daniel's track record suggests that the concept could change four times in the next two weeks but we can tentatively expect economical Japanese fusion and BBQ, plus "highballs, gin and tonics, wine" and "sake cocktails." Big fan of at least one of those things. Opening set for end of November probably maybe.
