Halloween Party Roundup 2-0-1-4

Sorting through the hundreds of Halloween parties to recommend the best raves, cheap piss-ups, family events, places you can bring your dog, and live rock.

So every venue in town has a Halloween party, or slapped the word Halloween onto their regular night. That makes for about 500 parties. We've narrowed it down to thirteen that probably won't suck, mixed in with some GIFs because flyers were scary bad for tha' 2-0-1-4. Oof...

Raves

This is the big one on Friday night. Events company TICT have held down the warehouse party game for the last few years and it's no different for tha' 2-0-1-4. You've got about ten local DJs throwing down house, bass, disco and tech-house in a big ass warehouse. for 70rmb. Note: The entrance to the party is on the water side of the street, on the promenade, just north of . You'll need to go up some stairs then down. Don't bother looking for a street number -- not gonna happen.

Saturday night is still kind of Halloween. Fashion/music blog Yeti In The Basement and Hong Kong event crew FOB team up for a triple booking of bass music artists from The Waiguo. Big headliner is French dude from the Clek Clek Boom label. Pretty big name in the underground club music scene. Some other Frenchies playing that too -- another dude from Clek Clek Boom and one from Ed Banger.

Rock

For the past seven years, Halloween has meant a night of tribute acts put together by devil-worshipping English teachers in the local rock community. This year it's Rage Against The Machine, Sublime, Blink182, and The Strokes. Throwback braaaaaaaa. More about that in . Always a solid time, this one. Just don't turn up too late, because rock kids in Shanghai are so hardcore they usually end their shows around midnight.

And for something a bit darker and more chill, like blasting beers and cigs with heshers, metal bar Inferno is showing horror movies (think: Troma Films) and playing metal on the stereo. Good tunes if that's your thing. For drink specials they're doing 40rmb Dead Guy Ale drafts and 20rmb shots of fireball whiskey, that liquor that tastes like candy from your youth.

Family Shit

The Shelter is opening its doors to minors, which is a scary thought in itself. Basically, the bomb shelter-turned-underground night club is inviting families. That's right, parents can take their kids down to this fetid den of iniquity for an afternoon of spooky pursuits. Awesome Kids Club are converting the place into a haunted dungeon, with tunnels, haunted houses, enchanted potions, and more. It's 300rmb for a family of four (one adult minimum) and 100rmb for each additional person. They're doing two sessions, a G-rated version from 4-6pm (4-7 years old) and another presumably PG-rated version from 7-9 pm (7-12 years old). Kids must be accompanied by a responsible adult—you know, the kind of parent who brings his or her kids to The Shelter.

Sacrifice the family dog for a chance to win two nights at a four-star hotel in Minhang! Kidding, kidding… Remember that we put up last week? Wang Ayi needs your help finding those little guys a home. This benefit event features live tattooing, a little market, food, drinks, and, of course, a DJ. It's 50rmb to get in, and that money goes to Wang Ayi's Dog Shelter. There is a costume contest for people and their pets, too. So go dressed up. Get more details here.

Posh Shit

Every year Bar Rouge does this party where people dress up as degenerate versions of Disney characters. Anyone going in Song Of The South gear this year? The crows from Dumbo? The Siamese Cats from Lady and The Tramp? This one happens both Friday and Saturday.

You know what's really scary? Poor people. Luckily this Halloween, you've got an option to look down on all those peasants from the 93rd floor of a luxury hotel in the bottle opener. Table service, bottles, models, costumes, and just people Halloween-ing in luxury.

Just Cheap

Student bar Propaganda up by Fudan university does a Halloween throwdown/costume contest. Drinks here are dirt cheap, like 5-20rmb. They've giving away booze and other free shit too. Best in show gets 2000rmb cash money. Second prize is a 1.5L bottle of Jack Daniels and a 1.5L bottle of champagne. Third prize: a 1.5L bottle of champagne. Anyone in a costume gets in for free and gets a "gift," too. Dreams! Culture! Study Abroad!

Just some bros throwing down house, tech house, and booty bass at a dive-ish bar on Xingfu Lu. It's free. Some chance the DJs Mau Mau and Raz will have some Baijiu to share as well. A little bit of tha' 2GT fo' the 2-0-1-4 Hallowizzle.

Beer

Boxing Cat Brewery is doubling up on Halloween and the anniversary the anniversary of its Sinan Mansions branch with its . For 150rmb you get all the craft beer you can possibly pour down your throat for five hours. People we know have thrown-up from this. They're also grilling stuff on the barbecue. That starts at 25rmb-a-piece. There is a costume contest, too. Music comes courtesy of DJ Miki Discosnot. It kicks off at 8pm.

will likely be pissing off its neighbors and blocking traffic with an all-day happy hour. This one will probably get pretty messy; they're pouring Kentucky Barrel Pumpkin Ale, which at 10% ABV packs a wallop. Not only that they'll have candy, pumpkins, and knives available. Hmmm... High gravity beer, sugar, sharp objects, and a large squash customarily used for seasonal acts of vandalism. What could possibly go wrong?

It's not really a celebration of Halloween per se, but it certainly is convenient that a ginormous beer festival falls on the same date. We believe this is a first in the festivals two year history, so we expect it to be a good time. You can count on lots of sloppy drunk people in costume, pounding beer upon beer from over 50 booths, maybe engaging in a little public urination. For entertainment there will be 20 DJs and acrobats doing acrobatic stuff. Admission is 50rmb, and this gets you a beer upon entry, but keep you eyes peeled for free tickets. They're usually all over town. More details here.
