Mixtape is where we ask DJs and producers coming to town, in their opinions, what are the five best songs ever and forever and ever. Or just five songs that are somewhat interesting for some reason. Or six songs. We're easy…

The Mix-maker: DJ, broadcaster, compiler, label boss, festival curator has been turning people on to tracks since the early '80s, boasting a discography of something like 100 comps released over the last 30 years. Although recognized as one of the major champions of acid jazz, his tastes fan out to all things that shake and hustle. This Saturday night, Gilles Peterson is at Unico for a night of Latin, funk and what sits between.

100 bennies on the door. Here are five tracks that GP sent over in anticipation of his show.

Gilles Peterson says: Here's five cuts I don't leave home without...

Dinosaur L — "Go Bang"

GP: Twisted disco from the king of the New York avant garde Arthur Russell — so ahead of its time. And it always captures the moment. No need for a remix; the original mixed by Francois K never fails!

Airto Moreira — "Tombo in 7/4"

GP: The original batucada anthem. Whether you like Brazilian music or not, you can't fail to wave your hands up in the air when this bomb reaches climax! And with the World Cup hitting Brazil in 2014, you'll be hearing this a lot at the GP RAVES!

James Blake — "CMYK"

GP: The moment that baseline culture took another step into the future… James Blake is one of the best exponents of the music scene today and will probably win the Mercury Prize this year. [he just did, last week, get it together, Peterson]. But remember this tune from 2009… still kicks ass today.

A Tribe Called Quest — "Excursions"

GP: Taken from my favorite tribe album, The Low End Theory, which also features "Scenario"… this cut uses Ron Carter's double bass exquisitely whilst tripping you out with its groove and Last Poets-style chorus… heavy original hip hop music from the dons!

Gregory Porter — "Liquid Spirit"

GP: This man's voice is the truth! He'll capture everyone with his soul and this track, the title track from his new album on Blue Note is even stronger than 1960 What… Watch the hand claps!
