Greetings, kids. Hopefully you’re having a happy hot Monday. It’s no secret Shanghai is a transit city. Many expats spend just one or two years teaching English, or studying Chinese, or trying to open a döner kebab stand that didn’t pan out. Promotion group Antidote has been doing its thing for 8 years now and is . Co-founder Michael Ohlsson, AKA DJ Ozone, who has since moved to Beijing to run of , continues to stay active in the Shanghai scene booking regular gigs at Dada Shanghai and .

Let’s take a trip back to 2005, when Shanghai was slightly more innocent place without the 5-15 international acts coming through every week. That was when Michael Ohlsson started doing local parties under the Antidote name at places like the Dingxi lu dive bar .  Over the past eight years, Antidote has not only flown out countless quality DJs and musicians but also help developed local Chinese acts to take the stage at Shanghai clubs.  Today, Ohlsson shares with us some of his favorite artists to play Antidote parties over the past 8 years.

Playing the anniversary party this Friday is accomplished Chinese producer B6, who is also a co-founder of the Antidote group. B6 is currently a working music producer whose roots come from performing in the synth band IGO and also co-founding the culture website Neocha. The reunion of B6 and Antidote party will be one of the main highlights of this Friday's party.

Ohlsson’s next pick is another local Chinese producer, MHP, who is also playing Friday. MHP produces mostly techno and deep house and, along with Antidote, has also been active with the VOID crew, who just celebrated their six-year anniversary recently. MHP was also a member of the now-infamous band known as Junkyard, which also included B6 and Chinese experimental pioneer Junky, who has gained international recognition releasing countless albums in multiple formats.

Slugabed is a Ninjatune artist who produces deep distinctive forms of electronic music that ranges from dubstep, hip hop and beyond. This U.K. artist’s presence in Shanghai was one of Antidote's contributions to Shanghai's music scene over the past eight years. While it’s easy to book big names that have a guaranteed draw, like Sasha and Digweed or Paul Oakenfold, it’s taking the risk on booking more left-field acts that really add to Shanghai’s emerging music respectability. Aside from his own work, Slugabed has released quality remixes like the track "Witness" that he did for Roots Manuva.

Planet Mu artist Kuedo. Also known as Jamie Teasdale, he used to perform with Roly Porter under the name Vex’d, and now produces more stripped-down abstract electronic music, like what appears on his full-length album Severant. Kuedo has been one of Planet Mu’s best acts over the past few years, check out his Soundcloud page for a more in-depth listen to his discography.

Another Ninjatune artist that Antidote has hosted is L.A.-based producer Mono/Poly. Along with Ninjatune, Mono/Poly has put out work on the label Brainfeeder, founded by Flying Lotus. His work is more on the down-tempo side with infectious bass lines and smooth loops for your listening pleasure. Mono/Poly also has a number of remixes of artists such as Lorn, Shapeshifter and more.

German producer Doshy not only found a love for China on his Antidote tour across our great red land, he found love in it as well. While on an Antidote China tour a couple years ago the electronic producer who pumps out everything from techno, glitch, hip hop and more met his wife JCC, who is a drum n bass DJ from Guangzhou. Over the past couple of years we have been lucky enough to check out Doshy playing a number of Antidote gigs, and, although he is back in Berlin now, hopefully it won’t be long before we get a taste of his new music live back in Shanghai.

Heading back to China on our Antidote 8 list is Beijing 8-Bit producer Sulumi. Producing a range of electronic music ranging from IDM, Techno, to 8-Bit, Sulumi has been one of China’s most influential producers over the past decade and has played multiple Antidote parties. After releasing an album on Modern Sky Records titled Air Inhibition of Water and then founded the label Shan Shui Records. Sulumi has also performed with big acts like Four Tet and was voted by Timeout magazine as one of China’s coolest rock stars.

Ohlsson’s final pick -- and my personal favorite -- is Philippines producer Caliph-8, who recently put out a cassette album on Shanghai label SVBKVLT.  A DJ/producer, graffiti writer and soothsayer from Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines, he is one of the true masters of the MPC.  Caliph-8 is also active in a band Bent Lynchpin and runs a regular party called Sub-Flex in Manila.

Ironically, they don't sell Mp3s or dabble in anything digital, instead they have 7" and 12", EPs and LPs from rock to electronic, rare pressings, DJ equipment and band merchandise. Find them in an old bomb shelter at 115 Pingwu Lu.
