A few days ago, we published a list with useful tools and links. Here's a few updates we found from the official announcements coming via various government sources.

Why are some tests taking so long?

For once there's of course a huge number of tests that are being done at the same time. To manage the workload, the "pool testing" method is being used where the swabs of 20 people are put together and tested in one go. If that test is negative, it means all 20 people are negative. If the test is positive, they'll have to test all 20 again, individually. In most cases this saves 19 tests. It's a cost-effective way but can be slower if positive test results are found.

So, when I test positive, I can now get quarantined in a hotel?

That's what we wrote last week, but that might not actually be the case anymore. On today's press conference, it's mentioned that the government is now setting up temporary quarantine locations such as stadiums and exhibition centers. We've seen picture online of how this looks like. So, whatever happens to you if you test positive remains unclear.

Another interesting update though seems that home-quarantine is now an option for those that had close contact with a covid patience when they have residence at home and live alone. It's a two-week home quarantine "if conditions allow", otherwise it's 7 days in central quarantine and then 7 days at home.

Where can I see how many cases there are in my grid?

. We don't know if this is actually an official source or just some dude putting the reported daily numbers on a map, so better just take it as a reference for which areas have more cases and which less.

What about those rumors about a 4-day lockdown?

Last night WeChat groups started filling up with rumors about a 4- or 7-day full lockdown for the city. That wasn't true. The city government that they've found the person that started the rumors, and they will be punished. So, let's remember, it's illegal in China to spread incorrect information. Be careful what you share in groups and on WeChat. Stick to official news.

I'm out. WHERE CAN I GET A BEER?!

Are some metro stations closed?

: Jinyun Road Station and West Jinshajiang Road Station of Line 13 and Fengbang Station, Yuexiu Road Station, Lintao Road Station and Jiayi Road Station of Line 14. Unfortunately, the Shanghai Metro doesn't have an app that publishes real-time updates on closures (one would have thought the world's largest metro system has the capacity to build that). But an easy way to figure out if a metro station you want to use or not is by searching for it on Baidu maps, their info is up-to date with closures.

I just got this SMS saying I may have been exposed??

Many people are receiving this SMS message. According to the Shanghai Epidemic Prevention and Control Press Conference, Wu Huanyu, Deputy Director of the Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention, has clarified the situation and asked the public not to panic, and that the messages only said that there may be a risk, it does not mean that you are already a close contact, and you will not be put in quarantine/health observation right away. If you can think of a possible way you might have been exposed, this is where those rapid antigen tests can be helpful. We wrote about those here. In the meanwhile, if you receive a follow-up call to investigate your journey, you shall cooperate actively and provide detailed information accurately.

I need to renew my visa but I'm locked up in quarantine?

According to Shine, "Expats in Shanghai who overstay due to pandemic control measures will get "understanding" from the exit-entry administration. (...) To those who have already purchased flight tickets and overstayed due to lockdowns, we will give them priority in the visa extension service once they can come to us in person to apply," said Zhou Chen, vice director of the bureau's foreigner document administration department. In any case, the Shanghai visa hotline is: 12367 and you are advised to call ahead before you visit one of the Entry & Exit Visa offices.

With so many cases, will Shanghai relax its Zero-Covid policy?

Unlikely, recent announcement said China will stick to its policy. However, that are critical of local governments having overstepped or gone to extremes, and calls for them to be more thoughtful in the application of pandemic prevention and control measures.
