Bars, Clubs, KTVs, Concert Venues Suspend Operations

As the Golden Week holidays come to a close, Covid cases in Shanghai are starting to creep up again as a result of increased inter-provincial travel. Developing over the weekend and today, District Prevention and Control Offices are taking measures to prevent the spread of ominous red squares on peoples' phones with a classic move: shutting down bars, nightclubs, movie theaters, KTVs, Internet cafes, escape rooms, (it's always the escape rooms), foot massage places — in short, "entertainment venues". An announcement from the Changning District office, so far the district with the most new cases in the city, has compelled the closure of the aforementioned classifications of venues from October 10 to October 15 — across the district.

Other districts in Shanghai are following suit with their own restrictions on who is allowed to operate in this sensitive time. Our feeds are full of venue owners pretty much in every area of town announcing the suspension of operations from anywhere from two days to the end of the weekend.

So yeah. You've been here before. If you want to go out to some place, call ahead and make sure your destination is open. In all likelihood... we wanna say... well, probably they're closed but maybe? But ummm? Probably not? But maybe? Doubtful?

Needless to say, we're all watching the case count this week. And hoping this fresh spate of closures doesn't get extended in the circumstance of more Covid cases arising.

That would be less than ideal. If you can imagine such a scenario.

New Rules for People Coming Back to Shanghai: Three Consecutive Tests Required

The other big development in pandemic prevention news today is the new rules concerning domestic travel from outside back in to Shanghai. Announced today via the Municipal Prevention Office, from now on, people coming back into Shanghai will have to get three tests on each of the first three days they're back... or their health codes will turn yellow.

For perspective, the yellow code looks unfriendly and it keeps you out of everywhere but as soon as you get a test it turns back to green. If you get one: don't panic. But get a test ASAP. You might get a text or call about it.

So keep that in mind if you're making it out of town for business or taking a short trip somewhere.

And don't forget, you also have to register when you cross back into the city limits.
