Coming soon: The Pfizer vaccine (probably?)

Last night and today, there's been a bit of buzz on Twitter and around the web about the Shanghaigoverment's mention in their new Covid guidelines that they plan to support the import of foreign vaccines and treatments.
: "支持新冠病毒疫苗和治疗药物进口" ("support imported covid vaccines and medicine"). Pfizer's oral COVID-19 drug and has been put into use. The antiviral COVID-19 pill - Paxlovid - has shown promising results, with a near 90% efficacy in preventing hospitalizations and deaths in high-risk patients.

The mention of "vaccines" by the Shanghai government, however, is the government organ appearing to outlinea future wherein they'll be recognizing and importing foreign preventative vaccines -- a positive development in the struggle to combat the spread of the virus indeed.

What's going on with dog walks during lockdown?

on the upcoming lockdown rules made it clear that all residents are required to stay inside their apartment for the duration-no exceptions. This included ruling out dog walks. Speaking with some of the volunteers, we're now hearing that some of the Neighborhood Committees of some compounds are recruiting more volunteers to help out with dog walking. Foreigners are apparently being accepted in volunteer roles. See the video below. The only requirement is that applicants are fully vaccinated.

Could be a solution to:

a) get out of your apartment and;

b) walk yours or someone else's dog?

Game the system, man!

What happens when you test positive?

Testing positive and getting the virus? Worrying. What happens when you test positive and have to ride out the virus in quarantine? Also worrying! As is common knowledge, people who test positive will currently be taken to a central quarantine location. As Shanghai converts more space to accommodate for new quarantine zones, there seems to be two types in use. We know of some people that are in hotel rooms; others are in large public quarantine locations.

Here is a list of district specific hotlines.

Remember, in the case of an emergency, call120. They speak English. Conversely, you can also contact the Neighborhood Committee that is managing your building's Covid stuff.

Also, conversely, you can call your district-specific hotline. The government has . And conversely, conversely, conversely still, you can call the city hotline at 12345, extension 7.

Ele.Me launches special service for the sick and elderly

Today, on the front page of Ele.me, one of the two big delivery platforms in China, you will find a doggie button that reads 应急特许 — "Emergency Help". If you belong to a vulnerable group, you can click on that and get special consideration in securing food, medicine, and other basic needs. That's a great idea. Good job, ele.me. Nice one. .

There's a huge-ass fine for people who drive up their prices during lockdown

Yesterday, the Shanghai Municipality on Public Health Emergency Management for people who might be thinking about screwing around with the rules. Refusing tests, forging tests, and breaking quarantine are all subject to "disciplinary measures according to law."

Also, "if a confirmed new Covid patient enters a public place or a public transport vehicle, it may also constitute a crime of endangering public safety by dangerous means."

They also state the fine for driving up prices on goods: "five times the amount of the illegal income" or a fine not less than RMB 50,000, and a possible jail sentence of 5 years.

Lastly, they had this to say: "Whoever spreads all kinds of rumors that cause anxiety and panic... shall be investigated for criminal responsibility according to law."

Don't mess.

Lifeline temporarily suspends phone line service

Mental health and well-being support hotline, Lifeline, has had to suspend their phone line service until further notice due to Covid restrictions. If you'd like to get in touch with them, use their online chat function via their WeChat. Search them out on WeChat at "LifelineConnect" and on the web at lifeline.org. Someone's on the other end, daily, confidentially, and anonymously, from 10am to 10pm.

Puxi restaurants are powering down; Get your last orders and shopping in

All day today our WeChat feed has been filled with Puxi restaurant owners and managers signing off as we head into lockdown this weekend — even before the Thursday night cut-off. We mentioned before that some restaurants would stay open but the majority of them are shutting down for the lockdown period. Allow us to emphasize again, that the vaaaaaast majority of them are shutting down. Basically, all of them. Get your last orders in now. And get yourself sorted to switching to home-based meals if you haven't yet.

Shanghai receiving aid from neighboring provinces

Getting into the jiayou spirit of things, multiple provinces in China are sending help to Shanghai, including Anhui, Zhejiang, Shandong, and more. As the city deals with the struggle to contain the virus, Shanghai's neighbors are variously sending a variety of necessities, including vegetables and food stuffs, as well as medical teams, and more. Hey thanks y'all! Team spirit.

Yeah... So, Hainan's OUT

The on March 29, 2022 contains some Shanghai-specific travel caveats. To wit: "From 12am on March 30, the following rules will be implemented on tourists from Shanghai:

  • A 7-day home quarantine and 7-day self monitoring. For those that don't meet the requirements for home quarantine, there will be a central quarantine.

  • During home quarantine, 1 Covid test needs to be done each day.

  • During self monitoring, Covid tests need to be done on the 9th, 11th, and 14th day.

  • For tourists from Shanghai that arrived from March 26, they should also fill a 7-day home quarantine or a central quarantine. After home quarantine, there will be a 7-day self monitoring with covid tests on the 9th, 11th, and 14th day."

***RECORD SCRATCH***

So, if you go to Hainan now from Shanghai, that's 7+7. BUT if you arrived on the island since last Saturday that's also 7+7? So, some people did the double tests and then got on a plane and flew it right into quarantine? HARSH BUZZ. Talked to one of our friends who arrived a few days ago. She says: "Got a call from Sanya Epidemic Control. In English, they said verbatim, ‘You may need to quarantine. Maybe 3 days, maybe 7 days. We'll call you and let you know.'"

Shout out to Bianca! Hope it turns out and they don't make you do it. What's the opposite of the phrase ‘surf's up'?
