Shabby and run down Wei Xiang Zhai has been slinging cheap, tasty sesame sauce noodles for decades. Pay no mind to the grubby walls. Just look at every table. You'll see bowls of noodles smothered in spicy, creamy sesame sauce. This is the specialty here. Do yourself a favor and order it. But eat it fast, before it turns gluggy.

    • "The food at Weixiangzhai is a mixed bag, but the sesame noodles (ma jiang mian) are definitely the standout. The noodles come tightly swirled, resting in chili oil, topped with sticky sesame paste and scallions—a deliciously rich dish that's worth every calorie. However, the other menu options, like the spiced beef broth and fried pork cutlet, are less impressive and not worth the trip. As for the service, it’s classic Shanghainese: quick, efficient, but a bit brusque. The staff moves fast, often shouting and spilling broth as they go. While some might find this adds to the local charm, it’s not exactly helpful or friendly. If you're just here for the sesame noodles, you'll enjoy your meal despite the service."

    • "Weixiangzhai is located just off a busy stretch of Middle Huaihai, and the atmosphere is quite the experience. The place is brightly lit but packed with greasy tables, exuding an air of surliness and grime that permeates the entire restaurant, including the staff. When you walk in, you head straight to the woman at the counter to order, possibly showing her a picture if you don’t speak Chinese. After paying, you take a ticket, find a seat, and wait for one of the hurried aunties to bring your food. The whole process feels a bit chaotic, and while the experience is unique, it's not exactly relaxing. If you’re not a fan of bustling, loud environments, especially during rush hours or when food tour groups arrive, this might not be your place."
