The is on for the next couple of days at Shanghai Library. Following the two-day Shanghai Forum of World Book Designers held earlier this month, a huge collection of beautifully designed books went on display, including winners of the title of "World's Most Beautiful Book", awarded annually at the Leipzig Book Fair.

Many past winners have been Chinese, and this show demonstrates why, while also exhibiting a bunch of beautiful books published by foreign designers.

Books bound with metal covers, books housed in intricately carved wooden boxes

and cover-less books are all on display. Old books, unopenable books, hand-painted books are all also exhibited, as are ones with embossed, de-bossed and die-cut covers. Favourites included a book whose pages contained no words but merely traced the movements of the planets in our solar system with a series of lines, and a book with a map for a slipcase. While most are protected behind glass, many books (including The Official Michael Jackson Opus) are available for vigorous leafing, and some are available for purchase. In an age when most reading is increasingly done on screens, this is a reminder of what a beautifully crafted object a book can be. And thankfully, there's not a screen in sight. More on the show .
