A new place to get pickled and sunburned at the same time, like a boozy sunflower. Terrace 8, located on the eighth floor of The Portman Ritz-Carlton, has been one of Shanghai's best kept rooftops, with an actual, thick, immaculately well-kept grass lawn on the top of the foremost building of the Shanghai Center. It's usually reserved for ritzy private events and weddings, but with things being the way they are, the Ritz-Carlton has decided to open it to the public. That means we — the sullied plebs scuttling about their pillared halls — deserve to drink champagne and wriggle our toes in the grass with an an unobstructed view of the Shanghai Exhibition Centre in the evening summer breeze. Splendid.

They've got deals on Spanish and Asian tapas, wine, cocktails, and champagnes — like free-flow Moët & Chandon for 668rmb per person — but you can also just order a la carte too. They recommend flats for ladies, and booking in advance (say over at ), since there are only about forty seats or so, but you can lounge on the grass all you like. The terrace is open Thursdays to Saturdays, from 5.30 to 10.30pm.
