Literature has gone to new heights in Shanghai, with the opening of the city’s highest bookstore on Tuesday. Fifty-two floors up, is in and was designed by Yuting, an architect known for designing “the most beautiful bookstore in Suzhou”, Zhongshuge. I queued for an hour and a half the other night to take a peek.

Expect panoramic, jaw-dropping views of the city and landmarks like Shanghai World Financial Center, the Oriental Pearl Tower and Jinmao Tower the moment you step out of the lift. Expect to get lost, literally, among the maze of shelves. Expect to be overwhelmed by the 60,000 volumes on offer. Highlights include all the curvy couches to relax on and a London Review bookshop-within-a-bookshop. But be warned. The lines for this new shop are long at the moment and the door policy is strict, so if you don’t want to wait as long as I did to get in, try off-peak hours.

Duoyun Bookstore, 52/F, Shanghai Tower, Yincheng Zhong Lu, near Lujiazui Huan Lu. .
