, which closed down a couple of months ago on Yongfu Lu, has found something of a second incarnation on Yongjia Lu, just down the street from . Tam's opened quietly last Friday, and I looked in last night.

The first thing to note is that, despite the name, it's not in fact Tam Lang's bar. He consulted on the project and they wanted to use his name, but it's not his bar. He's not managing it or a partner and that shows inside. Tam O'Shanter was a whisky bar, draped with Scottish flags and sporrons. Tam's is less geographically specific and feels more like a cafe or a lunch place. It's long and thin, with a bar and food counter down one side and stools in the window looking out on to the street. There are stools outside, too, that look into the bar through a hatch. It's bright and airy, with sandwiches and pasta dishes chalked up on a menu along with coffee and cakes.

For those who live on the street, it would be a nice place to get breakfast or lunch on a sunny day, or chill with the paper and suck back coffee. As for its bar credentials, they have Guinness and Carlsberg
