Duo Duo is both a man and a restaurant (多多小吃 a.k.a. "The Silly Watermelon"). His place existed for ten years on a -- let's face it -- blighted stretch of Aomen Lu, on the north side. A few years back, some graffiti kids, artists, and train-hoppers convinced Duo Duo, an uncle from Jiangsu that some might describe as "gangster", to let them open a bar in the front of the restaurant. They drank cheap beer and bumped rap music while all these local hoods played cards and that sketchy fishing game in the back. Sometimes, employees from the nearby "Princess Bar" would come through after work for a beer. It was a real global crossroads. Certainly not a "nice place" by any stretch, but this…clubhouse, this lair had a lot of soul.
