The circle of life churns at a frantic, untenable pace for venues in Shanghai. Follow our equally desperate attempt to keep up.

Hate to relay some sad news ferrying you into your weekend, but here we are: Dingxi Lu alterna-cool hotspot have told Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏÍø.com that they'll be closing down for good shortly after the October holiday. That's... pretty sucky. More after the jump and the official statement from the club's management.

*** From Matt and Phil AKA China Social Club, the part owners / managers / creative director-types behind the club:

Over the course of 2017, Smash has been an amazing concept space for parties, cocktails, pints, and spritz on the terrace and even winning ourselves Best New Club. Unfortunately for Smash, our incredible regulars and customers, the DJs, and everyone else who has come through the doors, the concept has proven bigger than the space. We have decided we can't achieve what we want to at this location and so Smash has decided to look for a more suitable venue. The venue will continue under a new name and ownership. ... We are officially closing September 30 with a final pop up event for Andras (Aus) on Saturday October 7, so see you soon for a drink ;) Team Smash x x

All the flags in Melbourne are flying at half-mast today. "The concept has proven bigger than the space" of course, refers to the ongoing neighbor problems Smash has been dealing with in their short run. With its street-level entrance surrounded by apartment buildings on all sides, combined with Shanghai's preferred method of partying -- hanging out in front of clubs and smoking -- it just wasn't a sustainable business environment to sling drinks and the club was consistently facing noise complaints, and having their events shut down early. Speaking with China Social Club, the venue space will revert back to the creative control of their local partners with the plan being to re-brand and re-orient it to something else. Something... quieter and more harmonious. So that's pretty shitty. Smash ceases to be officially on September 30, in just over a week. And then altogether on Saturday, October 7 with guest DJ Andras coming in from Australia to play at one last pop-up event. The CSC are looking to open Smash somewhere else in the city but haven't located a venue. Probably try a mall?
