The original production of Dreamgirls staged a 1,521 consecutive performances after its Broadway premier in 1981. Definitely says something about it. We went to an invite after its first night in Shanghai for a sneak peek, and liked what we heard and saw. The rags-to-riches storyline about the show biz may seem a bit obsolete today, and we鈥檙e way too late to catch the glam of Jennifer Holliday, who starred Effie in the original production, but luckily the music remains. Gospel, R&B, pre-Disco funky sassiness, interwoven together with soul 鈥� the sound of Dreamgirls is all about that old Motown flair.
